What’s the school like and how does it work?

Our school is small, friendly and professional. Keeping direct contact with our students is a priority. We, your teachers, will be in contact with you from the first moment. This allows us to advise you, check your level, choose the best course for you and evaluate your progress.

Our students get in touch with the school via e-mail or our booking form. We will send you a level placement test if necessary and go over the type of course, length of your stay and the conditions of the service. The first day of class students arrive a bit earlier, so we can share a coffee or tea and give you a folder with all the course materials.

Lessons at the school are very laid-back, focusing on students and teachers interacting as we follow the course contents. Each lesson includes plenty of communication dynamics for students to practise what they learn.

Do I need previous knowledge? What levels are there?

You don’t need any prior knowledge in any language. The level for beginner students is A1. Our course levels follow the curriculum designed by Instituto Cervantes, which conform to the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Our English courses are taught in accordance to the curriculum designed by Cambridge Assessment.

If you have any prior knowledge, we will ask you to take a level placement test so we can decide what course level fits you best (starting with A1 for beginners all the way through C2 for more advanced learners).

I already know a bit of Spanish. ¿How can I know what my level is?

We will send you a link so you can take a level placement test. This test is not mandatory if you’re a beginner and have never studied Spanish before. If that’s the case, we will place you automatically in the A1 level (Beginner). If you have studied Spanish before, you must take the test in order to book a course. With the results, we will determine your level and place you in the right group.

Sometimes the test can give a false impression, and upon meeting you, we might realise you belong in a different level. Don’t worry, if that’s the case you will be transferred to a higher or lower level group (based on your needs).

Which is my ideal course?

We need to know the length of your stay and whether you have any prior knowledge of the language. Tell us a bit about yourself and we will help you find a course that fits your needs perfectly.

What’s the course duration?

The duration of our courses varies depending on the type of student.

It is very common for most of our beginner students to enroll on 1-5 week courses.

Some other students do short courses some months of the year, whenever they’re in Fuerteventura.

Other resident students enroll on longer trimester, semester or yearly courses.

Can I extend the duration of my course once it has started?

Sure! Let us know as soon as possible and we will extend your stay in our school. If there is no group available at that time, you can extend to a private tuition course.

When can I start my course?

Some of our courses start every Monday of the year. This is the case with the courses chosen by our students who come to spend their holidays or have shorter stays in the island (under 3 months). Some students take on very intensive courses, spanning 1 or 2 weeks. This is very common in our school.

Private tuition courses can start anytime you want.

Other longer courses, like our trimester or semester courses in group, can only start when we reach the minimum of students per level (4 students). Contact us to check course availability.

What is the duration and schedule of the lessons?

The duration of a private lesson is 55 minutes. For a group lesson, they are 1 hour 50 minutes long.

We are very flexible when scheduling, it all depends on the groups we have each week. Some of our courses are taught in the morning, some in the afternoon. We do not offer lessons on the weekend.

What’s the number of students per group lesson?

Our priority is to teach to smaller, comfortable groups in which the attention can be personal and our students have the chance to interact. That’s why our groups are never comprised of more than 6 students.

What’s the age of the students?

Ours is, generally, a school for adults, with no age limit. The usual age range is between 25/30 and 50 years. Nevertheless, we have students with very different profiles coming to Glaucus from all over the world: young people coming to Fuerteventura for holidays, people who came to the island after retirement, groups of friends…

Sometimes, there are kids who have a great interest in languages. That’s why, on demand, we offer flexible courses for ages 8 and up. If this is your case, contact us so we can agree a course that fits the little ones.

What is Glacus’ teaching method?

We use quality teaching materials divided among the levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) with modern, up-to-date content in each of our courses. We also provide a wide variety of dynamics, cards, games, videos and creative ideas that make the learning exprience really fun!

For our long-term courses, we work with official textbooks, recommended by the Instituto Cervantes, for Spanish, and by Cambridge Assessment for our English courses.

Are materials included?

The enrollment fee (15€) includes copies, material, activities, diagrams, games and other dynamics. This fee also includes the Spanish for Travelling Learner’s Handbook for students taking the Beginners Intensive Spanish Courses that start every Monday.

The price of textbooks for students enrolled in our longer Spanish, English and Japanese courses is not included. These books cost around 30-40€ for an entire level. We can order them for you to make things easier.

Does the school offer private lessons?

If during your stay there is no group available for your level, you will be offered the same course in individual lessons.

If you’re looking for occasional private lessons or simply more lessons with private tuition because you like it better, the school offers multi-lesson passes for weekly lessons, too. This gives you more flexibility. The scheduling for individual lessons is subject to school availability.

What about online lessons?

Pretty often our students wish to continue with their lessons once they’re back home. Sometimes our students spend some time in Fuerteventura and some time away. Sometimes, students cannot attend in-person lessons. For them, we offer online lessons via Zoom or Skype. They are great, too, and we keep them as interesting and fun as the face-to-face ones.

*In the case of partial lockdowns due to COVID-19, courses will be offered online.

Will I get a Certificate of Attendance once I’ve finished my course?

Upon finishing the course, if you want to, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance if you have attended at least 85% of your lessons.

Can I obtain an official Spanish language certificate?

In order to obtain an official Spanish language certificate, we recommend you to check the official dates for the DELE exams organised by Instituto Cervantes. There are several exam dates per year, in many European cities.

At Glaucus Languages we can advise you on the right level to choose and we can prepare you for your DELE exam.

What is the school’s booking and cancellation policy?

Booking beforehand is the only way we can guarantee your place in our lessons and courses during your holidays. The earlier you book, the better, that way we can create groups in advance and everything will be ready when you arrive to Fuerteventura.

In order to fully book your dates, you need to make a payment of 25% percent of the total course price. If you cancel your course, this will not be refunded.

Payment for courses and lessons must be done on the first day of the course.

If I don’t attend a lesson, can I reschedule it?

We do not make up lessons if students have not attended.

In the case of multi-lesson passes, they have been designed with that in mind. If you have, for instance, 4 private lessons to distribute between 5 weeks, there is one weekly lesson you can miss (you should always let us know at least 24h in advance). This way, we can adapt to any unexpected event that comes up.

Can I book a Spanish + SUP/Surf lessons pack?

If you like water sports, Fuerteventura is the perfect place to round out your Spanish Course with surf or SUP lessons.

That’s why we work together with Buenaventura SUP & Surf School, with lessons provided by Jaran Rodríguez, one of the best local athletes and trainers on the island. Lessons in small groups, tailored to your needs so you can really learn surfing or paddling first-hand if you’re getting started, or improve your technique if you’re a more seasoned surfer.

Why not give it a try? We totally recommend it!
